The School of Engineering at UC Chile, one of the leading engineering academic institutions in Latin America and ranked among the top four emerging leaders for engineering education worldwide, invites outstanding candidates for a full-time faculty position in Igneous Petrology.

The position is presented by the Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering (DIEG) of the School of Engineering of the UC Chile.

This call aims to promote geoscience research in igneous petrology and tectono-magmatic processes, conduct excellent research, provide high-quality teaching (including teaching in the field and laboratory), and strengthen links with communities. Postdoctoral research, experience in handling analytical techniques specific to the discipline as well as numerical modeling, and interest in volcano monitoring will be valued. The candidate must be willing to interact with national and international networks and participate in interdisciplinary collaboration projects, strengthening the impact of geosciences at academic, applied, and social levels.

The candidate is expected to have knowledge in some of the following priority areas:

  • Petrology and mineralogy: composition, texture, and rock/mineral formation analysis.
  • Numerical modeling and advanced computational techniques: use of numerical modeling, machine learning and innovative methods in petrology and mineralogy.
  • Mineral and energy resources: interest in critical minerals, hydrothermal deposits, and geothermal energy, among others.
  • Volcano monitoring: design and implement systems to measure gas emissions or other indicators of volcanic activity.

Candidates capable of addressing multiple areas from this list will be prioritized, promoting scientific and technological innovation in the Geosciences and contributing to the interdisciplinary strategic development of the DIEG and UC Chile.

Duties: The position will require undergraduate and graduate teaching. The candidate is expected to contribute to teaching core courses of the Geosciences Major related to the bachelor’s degree and other interdisciplinary geoscience courses. The standard teaching load is three courses per year, including core courses in the curriculum of these programs. Additionally, the candidate is expected to develop one or two new graduate courses —in a reasonable time window, e.g., 3 years— in one or more of those priority areas. The selected candidate will be encouraged to join the Academic Committees of the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Civil Engineering, according to the established procedures of the programs.

Qualifications

The applicant should have an outstanding publication track record in the area, with the potential to obtain external research funds and develop high-quality teaching. Applicants should be proactive in pursuing independent research lines, be able to work collaboratively and show evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. associated with Igneous Petrology, emphasizing topics related to petrology and mineralogy, numerical modeling, mineral and energy resources, and/or volcano monitoring. Undergraduate studies in Geology, Earth Sciences or related areas are also preferred.

The position will be part of a highly interdisciplinary environment within Civil Engineering, where they will be able to engage with scholars in diverse research areas ranging from geology, geophysics and civil engineering to geography, and natural sciences, among several others.

Candidates do not need to be fluent in Spanish at the time of application but should be prepared to learn the language well enough to teach within a period no greater than two years. English is a requirement for this position.

Once the complete set of application material has been received, the applicant will be contacted within two months and informed whether the application has been accepted for further consideration. Appendix 1. Application steps

a) Interviews/Seminar:

These interviews and presentations are generally carried out within a week.
