CALL FOR ACADEMIC POSITION

The Department of Psychology of UC Chile has opened a competition for a full-time position for an assistant or associate professor¹ in educational psychology with research and teaching work shared with the Special Education Pedagogy Program² .

Since its creation in 1957, the Department of Psychology of UC Chile has trained more than 5,000 professionals. Currently, the Department is made up of 40 tenure track professors, 9 from a special teaching track, 12 adjunct professors, and approximately 900 undergraduate and 120 graduate students.

At the undergraduate level, it offers a bachelor’s degree in psychology and awards the title of Psychologist within five professional fields: clinical, work, educational, community, and health. At the graduate level, it offers three doctoral programs (psychology, psychotherapy, and neuroscience) and four master’s programs (clinical, educational, health, strategic people management and organizational behavior).

Tenure track professors are dedicated to teaching and research. Part of their research work is carried out with interdisciplinary teams such as the Center for Social Conflict and Cohesion Studies (COES), the Center for Indigenous and Intercultural Research (CIIR), the Measurement Center (MIDE), the Center for Inclusion Technologies (CEDETI), the Research Center for Integrated Disaster Risk Management (CIGIDEN), the Millennium Institute for Research in Depression and Personality (MIDAP), the Center for Research on Abuse and Early Adversity (CUIDA), the Millennium Institute on Violence and Democracy Research (VIODEMOS), among other research centers.

The Special Education Pedagogy Program was established in 2023 as an interfaculty initiative, involving both the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Social Sciences, through the Department of Psychology. The curriculum for the Special Education Pedagogy Program includes several undergraduate courses that overlap with the bachelor’s degree in psychology. Additionally, it features courses specifically designed for Special Education, some of which are taught by faculty from the Department of Psychology.

Experience in university teaching will be an advantage, as will publications related to special education, particularly those focused on individuals with disabilities, deaf individuals, or those on the autism spectrum. Additionally, knowledge or experience in bilingual education (v.g., Spanish and Chilean Sign Language) or intercultural educational approaches—especially those aimed at promoting inclusive education and reducing barriers to learning—will also be considered beneficial.

Candidates are expected to develop research initiatives that enhance the understanding of educational trajectories in both regular and special schools.

The focus should be on promoting inclusive teaching strategies for individuals with disabilities, deaf individuals, and those with autism. Emphasis should be placed on ensuring access to education that is culturally relevant and linguistically inclusive. Additionally, research that addresses current issues in inclusive education and generates evidence for designing evidence-based pedagogical practices or interventions will be particularly valued.

The chosen candidate must dedicate 50% of their working hours to teaching, which equates to teaching either four courses per year or three courses along with additional teaching responsibilities (such as supervising master’s and doctoral theses). In the first year of employment, only one course per semester is required. Candidates are also expected to develop research with external funding and supervise Master’s and/or Doctorate thesis.

The individual selected for this position will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the Psychology and Special Education programs. These courses may include Basic Psychological Processes, Developmental Psychology I, Psychology of Learning, and Research in Educational Psychology. Some of these courses are joint classes for both psychology and special education students, while others are specifically designed for psychology students or for master’s level courses and professional opportunities in educational psychology.

¹Depending on the background of the person selected, categorization as an assistant or associate professor will be
determined.
²The Department of Psychology at theUC Chile has announced three competition
opportunities: one for a tenure-track full-time position (focused on measurement in educational or developmental
psychology), another for a 33-hour per week lecturer position (focused on school coexistence), and the current
competition. All these positions are related to academic activities within the Department of Psychology and the
Special Education Pedagogy Program. Interested candidates who meet the requirements may apply to more than
one of these competitions simultaneously by submitting separate applications for each.
