The Institute of Astrophysics (IA) at UC Chile invites applications to fill at least two faculty positions at the assistant or associate professor level, depending on qualifications. The requirements are a Ph.D. in astronomy/astrophysics or related fields and a demonstrated ability and commitment to excellence in independent research and teaching. The search is open to all areas of astrophysics research and instrumentation, including interdisciplinary research.

The successful candidates are expected to join the research and teaching activities at the Institute of Astrophysics and interact closely with students. The Institute hosts a dynamic international community comprised of 14 faculty, ~60 graduate students, and 15+ postdocs, carrying out active research in cosmology, extragalactic and Galactic astronomy, stellar astrophysics, astrochemistry, exoplanets and planetary sciences, astronomical instrumentation, high-energy astrophysics, theoretical astrophysics, and numerical simulations. The Institute maintains a vibrant scientific atmosphere in its newly renovated building, including a strong visitor program, weekly seminars, colloquia, and daily Astro-ph discussions. Our environment cultivates a rich academic and social experience and allows substantial networking opportunities and collaboration at many levels. Institute members are part of the French-Chilean Laboratory for Astronomy (FCLA).

Additional information

As a member of the faculty, the successful applicant(s) will have access to the Chilean 10% of the telescope time in all the international observatories in Chile, including VLT, Gemini, Magellan, CTIO, SOAR, APEX, ALMA, and future observatories such as Rubin Observatory, CTA, E-ELT, Simons Observatory, and GMT. In addition, the Institute hosts several high performance computers for numerical simulations and large volume data reduction. Teaching duties mainly focus on astrophysics at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidates ideally should be able to teach in Spanish and/or English within approximately a year, although this is not a stringent requisite. Candidates are not expected to be fluent in Spanish at the moment of applying.
