The College of Agriculture and Natural Systems (FASN) of UC Chile, one of the leading academic institutions in Latin America, invites outstanding candidates to apply for a full-time academic position as an assistant or associate professor for the development of undergraduate and graduate teaching, research and relationship with society in the area of Biodiversity Conservation and Management.

Summary

The College of Agriculture and Natural Systems is looking for an academic to hold the position of Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Conservation and Management of Biodiversity. This position is co-financed by the CMPC UC Chair of Biodiversity and Sustainable Development. The person chosen for this position will be part of a diverse and interdisciplinary team in Forestry and Natural Resources. The ideal candidate corresponds to a person with experience in research and development of strategies for conservation and management of forests and/or environmental management in renewable natural resources, and their application in areas such as: strategic planning for biodiversity management and conservation, population modeling for decision-making, assessment of multiple threats to biodiversity and forest ecosystems, vulnerability to the effects of climate change, evaluation of the effectiveness of conservation actions in different systems, monitoring of species, ecology and/or conservation biology.

Duties

The selected person will have as main duties high-quality teaching (at undergraduate and graduate levels), student advising and research, both independently and in collaboration with other academics of the College. Other duties are to foster relations with society through knowledge transfer, dissemination, professional training, and also university service according to the academic category.

Teaching

The selected person must be able to teach at least two undergraduate courses for the forestry and/or natural resource students and at least one graduate course related to their specific skills. The undergraduate courses are Conservation and Biodiversity and Management of Protected Areas. Courses must be taught in Spanish.

Research

The selected person should lead a research program within the area of the call, being responsible for obtaining funds (national and/or international), planning research activities, generating scientific publications, training graduate students, and collaborating with other researchers from the College or University. Examples of development areas are conservation biology and/or ecology, conservation genetics, biological conservation strategies, biodiversity management, landscape ecology, and ecological restoration, among others.

Links with Society

The selected person is expected to develop links with the community and support the technology transfer of the knowledge and products developed during the research in accordance with UC Chile standards, and to carry out applied projects with public and private entities.

Qualifications

  1. Hold a PhD degree at the time of hiring in one of the following disciplines: Forestry Sciences, Ecology, Environmental Sciences or other related areas with an emphasis on the study of forest systems.
  2. Proficiency in English is a prerequisite.

If foreigners are selected for the position, they must obtain the corresponding visa in their country of residence in order to join the teaching staff of the University. Candidates are not required to be fluent in Spanish at the time of application, but they must be prepared to learn the language well enough to teach in Spanish in the short term (two years maximum).

It will be especially valued that the selected person possesses and can demonstrate:

  1. Ability to link basic and applied research.
  2. Experience in interdisciplinary research.
  3. Record of obtaining funding for research.
  4. Relevant teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  5. Experience in natural forests.
  6. Postdoctoral or international experience, which must be indicated in the application.

Additional information

A person of foreign nationality who applies from abroad, in case of being selected for the position, will need to have the corresponding visa, obtained at the consulate of the country of origin, for their incorporation into the academic staff of the University.
