The Faculty of Biological Sciences (FCB) and the Institute for Sustainable Development (IDS) at UC Chile invite applications for a full-time Assistant or Associate Professor joint position in the Regular Academic Track. The selected candidate is expected to demonstrate the ability to develop an independent, productive, and interdisciplinary research program addressing fundamental and/or applied questions at the interface between biology and sustainability in areas such as biodiversity conservation, socio-ecology, ecological restoration, climate change adaptation, One Health, ocean sustainability, among others.
This joint position aims to strengthen the institutional capacity to address complex socio-environmental challenges by integrating the rigor of the biological sciences with interdisciplinary sustainability perspectives. The selected candidate will be expected to actively contribute to interdisciplinary research, training in the biological sciences, and sustainability education programs at the University.
Candidates must demonstrate a strong focus on advancing the frontiers of knowledge in their respective fields. Particular consideration will be given to those with the ability to build interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research networks at the national and international levels, as well as demonstrated experience in outreach and engagement with societal stakeholders, including communities, decision-makers, or public policy processes related to sustainable development challenges.
Applicants must also demonstrate the ability to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels and to mentor early-career researchers. Experience in interdisciplinary teaching and active learning methodologies will be valued, as well as a proposed research agenda relevant to the sustainable development challenges of Chile and Latin America, contributing to the generation of place-based knowledge and context-appropriate solutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE POSITION

  • Conduct independent, high-quality research, either basic or applied, at the interface between biology and sustainability.
  • Establish collaborations and partnerships with researchers from other fields at the national and international levels, both within FCB and IDS and across other academic units within and outside the University, with the aim of strengthening interdisciplinary research.
  • Teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, delivering theoretical and/or practical courses, and contribute to the design and innovation of courses for students in FCB programs (Biochemistry, Biology, and Marine Biology), IDS programs (general education and programs such as majors and minors), and related disciplines in biology, equivalent to three courses per year at the University. Upon appointment, the candidate will be required to complete the 100-hour University Teaching Diploma offered by the UC Teaching Development Center.
  • Train professionals and scientists by supervising undergraduate theses and doctoral dissertations.
  • Secure external competitive funding to support their research.
  • Participate in academic and university management activities within the institution.
  • Carry out outreach and community engagement activities.

Qualifications

  • PhD degree and postdoctoral experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and lead independent research and to secure extramural research funding.
  • Teaching experience in higher education is desirable.

  • Relevance and potential impact of the proposed interdisciplinary research between FCB and IDS.
