Call for Applications: Position of Assistant Professor (Full-Time) of Archaeology
Job description
Tipo de planta académica: Regular Academic Track
Employment: Full time
The School of Anthropology at UC Chile invites applications for the full-time position of Assistant Professor of Archaeology.
Academic Profile
We are looking for an academic with an outstanding background to teach both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, conduct research, and fulfill faculty service and outreach activities in relevant, contemporary fields of archaeology. This job opening focuses on a regional diversification of national archaeological research and related areas, as well as complementing the School’s current academics’ profiles. It is desirable, but not required, for the candidate to be knowledgeable in a specific materiality, such as ceramics, lithics and/or historical materialities. We will also value experience in projects or scientific outreach, citizen science, public archaeology, with societal impacts and/or interdisciplinary approaches.
If the candidate is not specialized in Chile or related areas, we request a work plan including projections of future research in Chile or, alternatively, comparative work involving national archaeology or that of neighboring countries. Some knowledge of Spanish is required by the application stage, and fluency in Spanish is expected by the first year of employment. The position is onsite, including teaching responsibilities, meetings and other activities at Campus San Joaquin, so the selected candidate will be based in Santiago, Chile.
Candidates must have obtained their doctorate degree from 2015 onwards. However, we are able to consider candidates who received their doctorate degree beginning in 2013, due to maternity leave, paternity leave and/or health reasons. Candidates must demonstrate experience in line with their career stage, excellence and teaching vocation. We also expect a strong commitment to an ethical and well-rounded education.
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to produce high-quality research and obtain national1 and international research funding in the short to medium term. They must publish their research in relevant national and international peer-reviewed scientific journals. We will also highly value teamwork and organization skills needed to carry out administrative and outreach activities.
Teaching duties will consist of three semester-long courses per academic year, at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Responsibilities will also include directing thesis workshops and participating in undergraduate/postgraduate commissions.
Administrative duties will include regular participation in academic committees within the School, Department or University.
This job post is open to both Chilean citizens and international applicants.
The University will provide funding for early research during the first year, upon application.
Availability: July 2026 start.
The position will be based at Campus San Joaquin (Santiago, Chile).
1 Please note that, in order to obtain permits for archaeological interventions (excavations and surface material collection) in Chilean territory, one must hold a professional degree recognized by the State of Chile, in accordance with the regulations of the National Monuments Council. https://www.chileatiende.gob.cl/fichas/2461-reconocimiento-de-titulos-profesionales-obtenidos-en-el-extranjero
