The Institute of Sociology of UC Chile invites applications for an Assistant Professor position with specialization in university teaching, with a 0.75 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) contract, constituting 33 hours per week. This position includes academic evaluation and promotion processes, offering the opportunity to develop a long-term academic career.

The undergraduate program in sociology at UC Chile began in 1959, and the Institute of Sociology (ISUC) was founded in 1971. At the undergraduate level, it offers a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, conferring a Sociology degree certificate. At the graduate level, it offers a doctoral program and a master’s program. Currently, ISUC has established itself as a reference point in the field. According to the QS 2023 rankings, ISUC is ranked 59th globally, fourth in Latin America, and first in Chile. Its numerous publications, research projects, international collaboration networks, and the successful professional integration of its graduates have positioned ISUC as an outstanding place for research and teaching in the social sciences.

Qualifications

Through this call, we aim to recruit an assistant professor dedicated to enhancing the education of our undergraduate students, with a special focus on teaching. The applicant must:

  • Provide high-quality and innovative teaching, primarily at the undergraduate level. The expected teaching load is at least five courses per year (at least 75% of the workload).
  • Teach core courses in the Sociology program, such as Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Theory, Historical Processes, and General Education.
  • Lead teaching innovation projects.
  • Design and offer new courses in social sciences offered to undergraduate students across all university programs.
  • Participate in professional training activities (e.g., Degree Completion Workshops).
  • Optionally dedicate up to 15% of the workload to research. As with all university faculty, participation in academic administration duties, and/or community engagement tasks is also required (10% of the workload).

Candidates with prior experience and excellence in university teaching, including large undergraduate sociology courses and participation in teaching and learning innovation projects, will be highly valued. Proactivity, innovation, leadership, teamwork skills, and the ability to manage courses involving sub-divisions (when offered to more than 100 students at a time), and teaching assistant training will also be considered significant. These qualifications will be evaluated in light of the candidate's career stage.

This is an open call for both Chilean and international applicants. Foreign applicants must demonstrate advanced Spanish proficiency at the time of application and are expected to achieve fluency by the end of their first year.

Availability: The selected candidate must start no later than August 1, 2025.

This call is open to individuals holding a Ph.D. in Sociology or related disciplines. The required documents are:

  • Letter of Interest that details:

-  The motivation and reasons for applying to this position at ISUC. It should include a brief overview of your professional and teaching background to support your interest in this call. Additionally, it must explicitly state the contribution you aim to make to UC Chile community and ISUC.

- A teaching proposal in sociology, including a brief description of the courses you would offer and your approach to teaching them. The proposal should elaborate on how you plan to develop instruction in the areas relevant to this position, detailing teaching and assessment methodologies. Additionally, it should outline your plans for teaching and learning innovation, managing large courses, and training teaching assistant teams. Submitting a syllabus for an elective course in a relevant area of the discipline, such as Sociology of Art, Sociology of Organizations, Sociology of Science, or another topic, will be highly valued.

  • Complete Curriculum Vitae

- Dossier with course syllabi and teaching evaluations from the past three years, if available.

Two confidential reference letters that cannot be written by ISUC faculty members. Letters must be sent directly by the recommenders to "Carta de recommendation Concurso ISUC," specifying the applicant's name.

  • Copies of certificates, diplomas, and academic degrees.
